Most people who know me don’t know me at all.
I have a handful of people who can say they know me well enough to say they know me…and vice-versa…perhaps some through osmosis…and now one of them is dead.
That does not include ANY family members.
The rest of the people…ONLY know my name…including family members.
I know this by the questions they ask or their reactions to me…sometimes I’m surprised and sometimes they are surprised.
When I became single I joined a singles group through meetup…and they all seemed to ‘know’ each other for years and called each other ‘friends ‘.
Ok…so does Jenny have kids…
Oh…I don’t know…
Do you know where John works..
Oh…I don’t know…
Fred has been missing for months…do you know if he’s still alive…
Oh…he’s my very good friend…but I have no idea.
I see him once a year.
So you’re NOT friends…
Maybe my comprehension of ‘friend’ is different.
I had to recategorise who is family and what is a friend in my mind and I saved myself a lot of disappointment.
Putting expectations on the wrong people sets you up to be disappointed by a whole lot of wrong people.
Is just knowing someone’s name enough to say…I know them…or maybe I know of them is more appropriate.
Is this true for you…
